I am a full-time reporter at The Day in New London, where I cover the towns of Putnam, Killingly and Plainfield in Northeastern Connecticut. Also known as the “Quiet Corner,” it is safe to say this area is not in the slightest ‘quiet.’ My job has been to form connections with sources, attend town meetings and talk with residents about issues that matter most to them. From the strong resident opposition and lawsuits of large warehouse developers, to locals who want to save a state pond and dam, and new and up and coming businesses, there is much to cover in this part of the state.

Putnam is known for its art in the Quiet Corner. What could have been a short story of Putnam seeing three new sculptures, I expanded the feature into the backstory of local artisan Michael Saari who has created art and taught classes across the world. I visited his studio in Woodstock and he showed me the intricate process of crafting each piece of metal that makes up his work.
Amazon warehouse developer appeals Killingly denial

Residents in Killingly have been actively opposing large warehouses into their neighborhoods for months. After the Killingly watershed commission denied the 1.3 million square foot Amazon distribution center, the developers filed an appeal to the Putnam Superior Court. After combing through application material and court documents and speaking to key leaders, I wrote this story.

Plainfield gearing up to fight trash plant proposal

The developer of a waste-to-energy trash plant filed their application with the Connecticut Siting Council and residents are fighting back. At a Plainfield Board of Selectman meeting, First Selectman Kevin Cunningham said he wants to allocate money from their fund balance to pay for expert attorneys. After reading through the developers petition to the council and talking with Cunningham and residents, I wrote this story.
Plainfield student qualifies for roller skating World Cup

Plainfield native Ally Schmidt qualified to represent the U.S. in the Figure Roller Skating World Cup. In this student success story, Schmidt learned everything she knows about roller skating at the small skating rink in Plainfield. I interviewed Schmidt and her coach Lynn Cassio about what it takes to be an artisan figure roller skater and their journey to success in the rare sport.
